Health Act

Key Benefits
The Health Act makes a number of high profile changes to protect the public's health as well as improvements in the administration of the NHS.

The Act Bans smoking in the vast majority of workplaces and public places and sharpens the health care associated infections such as MRSA. In addition the Act also includes provisions on the following areas:

Safer management of controlled drugs in the NHS;

Modernisation of pharmacy services;

Modernisation of ophthalmic services;

Widening the role of the NHS Appointments Commission;

NHS counter-fraud and security management;

NHS Injury cost recovery scheme;

Transfer of criminal liability in the NHS;

Administration of the Social Care Bursary scheme;

Audit arrangements for special health authorities.

Additonal Information

Making a vast majority of enclosed public places and workplaces smoke-free
and reducing healthcare associated infections are fundamental parts of implementing the Choosing Health White Paper (November 2004), and implement two a key manifesto commitments.

The abolition of two NDPBs implements the of Department of Health's wider review of its Arms Length Bodies conducted last summer and will cut the numbers of its Arms Length Bodies by 50 per cent.
