KEY MEASURES
- Enables the establishment of statutory commons associations with powers to sustainable manage commons by majority decision making.
- Prevents severance of common rights from the land to which they are attached.
- Modernises registration of common land and common rights - including allowing "missed" commons to be properly recognised, and correcting wrongly registered land.
- Reinforces existing protections against abuse, encroachment and unauthorised development.
TERRITORIAL EXTENT
The Bill extends to England and Wales.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- The 2000 Rural White Paper for England committed to legislate on common land as soon as Parliamentary time allowed.
- The Bill builds on many of the proposals in Defra's Common Land Policy Statement 2002.
