Commons Reform

The Chamber of the House of Commons is the public face of Parliament.  It is the forum for the most important debates, decisions and announcements.  The Chamber is the image that most people have when they think about Parliament.

It is important that the style and content of debates in the chamber reflect the concerns and priorities of all citizens.  It is the most important national forum for debating issues of national concerns.

There are undoubtedly ways that the Chamber could be modernised.  The Modernisation Committee has made a number of proposals for reform since it was established - removing some of the jargon, updating procedure and improving the style of debates.  Questions to departments are now more topical because there is a shorter notice period and the use of time limits on speeches from MPs is common in many debates.

If you have views about the format and content of the Chamber please email the Leader of the House of Commons: chamber@commonsleader.x.gsi.gov.uk
