Modernisation Committee

2006 - 2007

  1. Revitalising the Chamber: the role of the back bench Member

Following two parallel ten-month inquiries, the Committee published its first report of the session into 'Revitalising the Chamber: the role of the back bench Member' on 20 June 2007.

The recommendations in the report included topical questions times, a new weekly 90 minute debate on a big issue of the day and other measures to improve topicality, remove barriers to participation for back bench Members and to improve the induction process for MPs.

The Government issued its response on 18 October 2007. Motions were brought forward to enable the House to bring the improvements into effect. The debate will be held on 25 October 2007.
