Transport (Wales) Act


Key Benefits

Gives National Assembly for Wales the powers it needs to take forward its integrated transport policies, including:

duty on Assembly to develop and implement policies for promotion of safe, integrated, efficient, economic and sustainable transport facilities and services;

duty on Assembly to prepare a Wales Transport Strategy, setting out those policies;

ensures that local transport planning is consistent with the Assembly's overall transport strategy;

provision for joint working arrangements and for joint transport authorities in Wales so that Local Authority (LA) transport functions are carried out on a regional basis;

empowering the Assembly to secure the provision of public passenger transport services where the requirement for such services would not otherwise be met;

a specific power for the Assembly to give financial assistance in respect of air services and airport facilities in Wales, where the services or facilities would not otherwise be provided;

Additional Information

Draft Bill published last session (27 May 2004) and was scrutinised by a joint session of the Welsh Affairs Committee and the Assembly's Economic Development and Transport Committee.  The final Bill was introduced into the House of Commons on 15 December but did not progress any further.
