EQUALITY BILL

KEY BENEFITS

  • Equality is not a minority concern, but matters to every one of us.  The CEHR will provide a route to greater social cohesion and economic prosperity through providing equality of opportunity for all 
  • The new Commission will:
  1. be a strong and authoritative champion for equality and human rights
  2. tackle barriers and inequalities affecting several groups and the costs this incurs to the economy
  3. provide advice and support to individuals on all discrimination issues and information on human rights in an accessible and user-friendly way
  4. be a more effective partner for employers and service provides, meeting their needs through providing a single access point to information, advice and guidance
  5. provide vital institutional support for age, religion and belief, sexual orientation and human rights that stakeholders are demanding
  6. be able to promote good relations among different communities

TERRITORIAL EXTENT
The Bill will apply to Great Britain. Although equal opportunities is a reserved matter,  the encouragement of equal opportunities which falls within the devolved competence of the Scottish Parliament, and in Wales, the National Assembly has a duty to promote equality of opportunity. Human Rights issues arising in devolved matters will be the responsibility of the Scottish Parliament's announced body.
